Hydra AMS for Bambu Lab X1 and P1P - Modification enables larger filament selection

3d printed AMS for Bambulab

BambuLab X1 – a printer that brings a breath of fresh air to the world of 3D printing

The Bambu Lab X1 Carbon is a 3D printer with a wealth of new features, including automatic mesh bed leveling with an usage of AI recognition. A so-called lidar sensor measures the extrusion width before each print to automatically achieve the optimal layer consistency when printing at the high speeds. According to the manufacturer, the Carbon X1 can print at speeds of up to 500 mm/s.

The BambuLab Carbon X1 is a high-performance 3D printer designed for professionals and advanced users. It features a carbon fiber reinforced construction that offers a strong and rigid frame. That's why, this device is able to produce high-quality prints with minimal vibrations.

With a build volume of 256 x 256 x 256mm, the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon is able to produce large and complex prints. With the high-precision printhead, you achieve prints with exceptional detail and accuracy. In addition to its advanced hardware, the Carbon X1 also boasts a user-friendly interface and a range of thoughtful features, including automatic bed leveling and filament detection.

It is compatible with a variety of materials including PLA, PETG, ABS and TPU, and can be used to produce a variety of different prints: from prototypes and models to functional parts and finished products.

Overall, the Bambu Lab Carbon X1 is a powerful and reliable 3D printer that is perfect for professionals and advanced users who expect the highest quality print results.

Hydra AMS for Bambu Lab

The Automatic Material System (AMS) - great system with limitations

For printing with several colors or different materials, the Bambu Lab Carbon X1 (and also the Bambu Lab P1P) can be equipped or retrofitted with a material changing system, the so-called Automatic Material System (AMS).

With this unit it is possible to automate the 3D filament change and to enable an optimized print result.

With the AMS, switching between different materials is seamless and non-disruptive, reducing the need for manual intervention and improving overall print quality.

Thus, the Bambu Lab Automatic Material System (AMS) is an essential accessory for anyone looking to improve the efficiency and quality of their 3D printing process.

Unfortunately, when designing the AMS, the focus was mainly on the functionality when using your own filaments or the spools from which they are unwound. As a result, many 3D printing filament spools from other manufacturers were difficult or impossible to use.

The community used specially developed devices to rewind filament from the original rolls onto empty Bambu Lab rolls.

Recently, this problem has also been a thing of the past. The development of the Hydra AMS by humebeam is perfect proof of how 3D printing can be used as a problem solver. The Hydra AMS is an improved drop-in main body replacement for the Bambu Lab AMS, a multifilament add-on for the Bambu Lab X1, X1C and P1P printers, with the following changes:

  • Larger spool widths of up to 75mm, which means that the most common 1kg spools from most 3D filament manufacturers can now be used.

  • Adjustable spool reels in four positions for 120mm to 205mm diameter spools.

  • AMS feeder/motor mechanism angled back five degrees to allow for full spool printing.

The parts for the Hydra AMS can be printed entirely without supports and no additional parts are required for assembly other than 4pcs M3 x 20mm screws.

The individual parts are snapped together with dovetail joints and inserted into the standard AMS outer housing. All original built-in parts, such as the four feed motors, the rear motor, the front and rear rollers, the RFID circuit boards and the main circuit board as well as the PTFE hoses and cable connections can continue to be used.

Nobufil ABSx Astro Gray

Nobufil ABSx filament is made from recycled plastics. This is production waste that occurs during industrial processing. In contrast to filaments made of conventional ABS, this material tends to have significantly less warping and has reduced odor formation thanks to special modifications. This also enables processing on printers with an open installation space.
